A big thank you to all of the children, parents and teachers who put lots of effort in to their fantastic costumes! A total of $500 was raised and donated to the Philippines, to help those in need after the typhoon.

Tangrams

Tangrams

Like building blocks, tangrams can teach kids about spatial relationships. They may help kids learn geometric terms and develop stronger problem solving skills. They might even help children perform better in general mathematics.

But what are tangrams? A tangram is a Chinese puzzle consisting of 7 shapes (or “tans”):

• Two large right triangles

• One medium sized right triangle

• Two small right triangles

• One small square

• One parallelogram arranged correctly, the shapes can be fitted together as a large square, rectangle, or triangle. They can also be arranged in a variety of complex shapes, including fanciful ones.

There are many ways to play with tangrams. The simplest way is to let kids create their own complex shapes. But traditionally, tangrams are treated as puzzles. The player is shown a target shape (in outline, or silhouette only) and then asked to recreate that shape using the seven pieces. As noted below, tangrams can also be used to teach kids to measure area without a formula — an approach that should help kids develop an intuitive sense of geometry.

Here are some pictures my preps created using tangrams-creative to say the least!

Prep Breakfast, 2013

We all had an amazing time having breakfast at school! I have to say I have never seen children eat so much food! Some students had cereal and three pieces of toast. It was a great learning experiecne for the children as they were expected to spread their butter and spreads. Students were also expected to pour their drink and wash their own plate, bowl and spoon. The children did a fantastic job and the only think that went wrong was a few pieces of burnt toast! More photos to come…..

Learning our Doubles!

We have been learning our doubles this week in numeracy and this song helps us to remember them.
When prep children get past 5 + 5 and they run out of fingers so some have a very difficult time memorizing their doubles. We made two different foldables to help them learn their doubles. They are similar to flashcards and allows for students to illustrate the addition sentence on one side and write the answer on the other!

 Like the song says,

“It’s no trouble for me to add doubles”

and pasta necklaces.

IDEAS FOR DRESS-UPS:

Italy is probably the country with the richest artistic heritage in the world. Everywhere you go there are museums and art galleries, but above all monuments, ruins and buildings, a living testimony of an incredibly rich past. Italian artistic influence spans over 30 centuries, from the Etruscans to nowadays and has embraced every branch of the arts – painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, music, cinema, literature etc…-  It is impossible to list all the famous buildings and all the famous artists. Works of art include: the Leaning Tower of Pisa (the world’s most recognizable landmark), the Colosseum and  Leonardo’s famous painting of the ‘Mona Lisa’ .

Some famous Italian artists, musicians, writers and actors are: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Vivaldi, Raffaello, Verdi, Dante, Calvino, Pavarotti and Sophia Loren.
